Sen. Barack Obama has finally caught Sen. Hillary Clinton in the race for Super Delegates. Well, almost! At day's end she had 271.5, and he had 271.0. Don't ask about how one becomes a "half" delegate because it simply conjures up the famed wood chipper scene in the movie "Fargo."
The delegates mostly come from the ranks of Congress and include Rep. Don Payne (D-NJ), who had previously supported Clinton. Obama picked up nine Super Delegates today, while Clinton landed one. This will likely go from a trickle to a landslide over the next week. People want to bet on the winning horse, and it's going to be Obama.
One of the leading theories now is that all sides agree the campaign is over - that all we will see for the next three weeks is for the Clinton campaign to "die with dignity." She will go on to win West Virginia, Kentucky and Puerto Rico, but will fall short of the nomination. Still, it will be the most impressive and historic effort by any female candidate in U.S. history.
Democrats are smart to do this, if this is indeed the strategy. This keeps them in the headlines and keeps John McCain out of the media spotlight. This is especially advantageous for fundraising.
The next step is for Obama to pick his running mate! I already have a good idea on the likely choice and will share my reasons in a weekend column!
Monday I travel to Charleston for the West Virginia primary. As always, check in at www.MarkCurtisMedia.blogspot.com.
