Voter Turnout Keeps "Potomac" Polls Busy

(Arlington, Virginia)

Voter turnout was steady this morning, in Arlington, Virginia, just "next door" to Washington, DC.

Polls were open in the District of Columbia and Maryland as well. It's the so-called "Potomac Primaries!"

Rain and snow for parts of the mid-Atlantic region this afternoon, could mess things up a bit and dampen the overall turnout.

Polls indicate it could be a 3-race sweep for Republican Sen. John McCain, (R-AZ) and Democratic Senator Barack Obama, D-IL). But a "proportional" division of the all important convention delegates, could keep it much closer.

The "Washington Post" has the following delegate totals: DEM: Clinton, 1,136, Obama 1,108, with 2,025 need for the nomination. GOP: McCain 719, Huckabee 234, with 1,191 needed to nominate.

The latest Real Clear Politics composite poll has it: Virgina - Obama 55%; Clinton 37%; Maryland - Obama 55%, Clinton 33%; DC which is nearly 60% African American, is predicted to vote heavily for Obama.

On the GOP side: Virginia - McCain 48%, Huckabee 37%; Maryland: McCain 52%, Huckabee 26. Many local polls include DC voters, so there is no seperate breakout. But McCain, with over 30 years of ties to DC, is widely expected to win.

Most candidates are campaigning elsewhere, looking ahead to the next round of primaries. But John McCain will hold a victory rally tonight in Alexandria, Virginia and I will be there to cover it!

I will be "live" from DC with Ross McGowan tomorrow at 7:45 on KTVU's "Mornings on 2"
