Clinton Wins ONE Super Delegate in Congress!

(Danville, California)

It probably won't cause a surge in national momentum, but chalk up another Super Delegate for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY ) in her run for the White House.

Former California State Sen. Jackie Speier won a seat in Congress Tuesday, to replace the late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA). Speier, who barely missed being elected Lt. Governor two years ago, will serve the rest of Lantos's term.

She has endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president and will vote for her as a Super Delegate this August at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

At a rally in San Francisco, Speier spoke to reporters, including the Associated Press. "I'm thrilled by the opportunity to be a Super Delegate," Speier said. "I think we're going to come together as a party, and we're going to nominate the individual who's going to take us to victory in November."

Many consider Speier, 57, to be a rising star in California politics, perhaps seeking to become Governor or U.S. Senator down the road. She fashioned herself as a consumer advocate while serving in the State Senate for two terms.

It was 30 years ago this year, that Speier was near fatally wounded in the Jonestown massacre in Guyana, South America. Congressman Leo Ryan went to investigate the Bay Area- based cult and its leader, the Rev. Jim Jones.

Ryan is seen in this photo exiting the plane with Congressional Aide Jackie Speier. Two days later Ryan was shot to death, and Speier was shot five times by those defending Jonestown.

The 12th District seat includes a portion of southwestern San Francisco and almost all of San Mateo County to the south.

I will be covering the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August, but will be on the campaign trail until then. I will report from Philadelphia in two weeks.

Hi Mark - Are all Democrats in Congress Super Delegates?

Thanks for your insightful political blog.

Great question Gary. I don't know if ALL Democrats in Congress are Super Delegates, but I bet most are. It's up to the state party in each state, and usually high ranking party elected officals get picked. But I've run into people like union leaders who are also Super Delegates for their party loyalty and ability to deliver union votes.
