Big NC Win for Obama; Hillary Hangs On in IN

(Raleigh, North Carolina)

After three tough primary defeats in three of the nation's biggest states, Sen. Barack Obama won a "Top Ten" state tonight as he defeated Sen. Hillary Clinton in North Carolina. The latest tally has Obama up in North Carolina 56 percent to 42 percent. Clinton clings to a slight 52 to 48 percent margin in Indiana.

Obama delivered a rousing 20-minute victory speech at North Carolina State University's arena. He says stories about the Democrats being too bloodied to win in November are not true.

"Well I am here to tell you tonight, I don't believe it," Obama said. "Yes, there have been bruised feelings on both sides, but ultimately this race is not about Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or John McCain. It's about you, the American people!"

The crowd roared in approval and shouted the now familiar campaign chant, "Yes, we can!"

One of those in the crowd tonight was Sammie Whiting-Ellis, who is fully backing Obama because of how he inspires people. "I think he makes people think of themselves at a higher level," she said, "and he respects the fact that they can think."
The race does not appear over. While Obama widened his delegate lead slightly tonight, he and Clinton square off next Tuesday in the West Virginia primary.
