Huckabee Won't Quit; Stumps in Military Stronghold

(Virginia Beach, Virginia)

If you're going to beat Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), you better beat him where he runs strongest: in heavy military communities.

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) did just that today, campaigning in the military stronghold of Virginia Beach, VA, the day before the "Potomac Primaries" in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC.

McCain, a former Navy fighter pilot, who was shot down and spent over 5 years as a Vietnam Prisoner of War (POW), is especially popular in military and foreign relations circles. Despite that, he is widely vilified by the Republican right wing, especially radio talk show hosts.

Huckabee, who is definitely more conservative than the Arizona Senator, is hoping to "springboard" off that. Last week Huckabee won five Southern primaries, and also took home Kansas and Louisiana Saturday, with a narrow loss in Washington state.

Truth be told Huckabee would literally have to sweep 93% of the remaining delegates left to win the nomination. The former Baptist preacher, turned Southern Governor, obviously believe in miracles.

Today he wowed a jam packed, overflow crowd at the Holiday  Executive Center in Virginia Beach. The crowd was heavily military, active duty and retired.

The crowd cheered wildly when Huckabee pledged to return the military spending to 6% of GDP, Gross Domestic Product, "just like it was under Ronald Reagan," Huckabee said.
Huckabee, also accused the U.S. of being too dependent on foreign oil, especially from Arab nations, and other rogue governments. "We finance both sides of the War on Terror" by lining Arab pockets with U.S. dollars for oil.

Huckabee promised an end to U.S. dependence on foreign fuel, within 10 years if elected President.

Huckabee also said he is the only "true Pro-life" candidate left in the race, (even though John McCain also opposes legal abortion.)

The long-time Arkansas Governor hopes his appeal and success in Southern states, will continue tomorrow is some of the "most Northern" Southern states, Virginia and Maryland.

Tonight I will attend John McCain's final rally in Richmond, before voters begin casting their ballots tomorrow morning.

Huckabee's support seems to be more strongly from social conservatives, which certainly makes him strong in the South. Perhaps he would make a good choice as running mate for McCain.
